Our goal

To promote employment creation and acquisition for the youth in Ogun state.

Intro

Employment is one of today’s most pressing challenges, not only in Nigeria but throughout West Africa and beyond. Securing decent and productive work in Nigeria remains daunting for many.

TRHI is working with and for young people who are seeking quality and productive jobs, by promoting access to quality education and skills development and training.

The need

Unemployment is a major concern among Nigeria’s young population. From 2010 through 2020, the National Bureau of Statistics categorized youth unemployment as steadily increasing.

According to the Nigerian Youth Development Action Plan (2021-2024), Youth unemployment (15-34 years old) stood at 35% in 2020 (Q2). Another 28% of young individuals in the labour force were classified as underemployed (working 20-39 hours per week), while 37% were classified as full-time (working 40 or more hours per week). While a specific estimate of the COVID-19 pandemic’s labour market impact on Nigeria is lacking, the pandemic is projected to impose further strains on youth labour markets.

Unfortunately, the country’s general education system is not preparing enough graduates for the labour sector. There is a mismatch between the capabilities of graduates and the demands of businesses. Unfortunately, 23% of individuals who complete the educational system are unemployed since there aren’t enough jobs to go around.

Our response

In accordance with the UN SDG Goal 8 of “promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all,” TRHI recognizes that equipping children with vocational skills is one way to bridge the skills gap in the community and available employment opportunities.

When a general survey was conducted in Ogun state to examine a percentage of young people’s interest in vocational careers, the majority expressed a desire to seek hands-on learning to broaden their abilities and increase their chances of employment.

As part of our efforts toward employment creation in the country, we have also hired, trained and retained talented employees within our family offices.
